The New York Times singled out Dance chair Gerald Casel in their review of Oliver Tompkins Ray’s spoken-word opera Woolgathering, based on singer-songwriter and author Patti Smith’s memoir about growing up in South Jersey.
“Mykel Marai Nairne and the veteran dancer Gerald Casel are beautifully delicate and graceful movers, and Heginbotham gives them simple motifs that find their own form while relating subtly to images in Smith’s text,” critic Brian Seibert writes.
Casel performed Woolgathering alongside Smith on October 23 and 24 at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York City. He also performed the evening-length piece on October 21 as part of Baryshnikov Arts’ gala honoring Yvonne Rainier.
