When Dance alum and lecturer Kiana Rosa Fischer (BFA’16) found out she was pregnant with her third child, she began to grapple with what motherhood might mean for her art.

And, like many artists, Fischer turned to the creative process to work through her questions.

“I was thinking a lot about motherhood, my role and duty as a mother along with my desire to be a mother,” she says, “but also my desire to create—to write, dance, teach—and the question of whether or not those other desires will (or even should) slowly dissipate as my kids grow. But finally, a thought came to me and it was something like, ‘Just do something. Do it now. You have to do something now.’

“Making a dance film was the clearest option, as I didn’t have to wait for a gig or a commission,” she continues. “I could just make something without anyone telling me or needing me to do so.”

That dance film, These Years, is set to debut on September 13 at the Fall 2024 New Jersey Film Festival here on the Rutgers-New Brunswick campus.
