Alan Baer is a lecturer in the brass area and joined the New York Philharmonic in 2004 as Principal Tuba. “The tuba is very powerful and the conductor can use it like a bulldozer to push or pull the orchestra in the direction he may want to go,” he told the NY Phil in 2019 in an online interview. Fun fact: Baer started out on the guitar, then, in fifth grade, opted for the tuba. “I was always a big guy, and the tuba seemed more fitting than the violin,” he said.
