Biography

Alex Lough works with electronics specializing in the fields of electroacoustic improvisation, music for dance, installations, and intermedia art. His work focuses on implementing experimental technology in order to discover new performance contexts with particular attention given to the body and the physicality of sound.

As a performer, Alex has extensive experience with electroacoustic duos. Alongside pianist Mark Micchelli, Alex is a member of the piano+electronics duo Teeth and Metals, which has performed fully-composed and freely improvised music throughout the United States and internationally. Additionally, he has recorded and performed music for flute and electronics with Nicole Mitchell (flutes/electronics) in Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Ojai California. His most recent and ongoing project is Diosunis Duo, a collaboration with his partner Hanah Davenport in which they experiment with voice, text, poetry, feedback, resonant vessels, and modular synthesizers. In addition to his work with duos, Alex has also performed with International Contemporary Ensemble at Ojai Music Festival, Either/Or Ensemble in New York, and has commissioned and composed solo repertoire for performed electronics.

In his work with dance, Alex writes music for choreographers and specializes in creative sound design. He has written for choreographer Lisa Nuagle for work performed and exhibited in New York and Italy. He also composed the music for DUSK, a dance for the time when the light is fading choreographed by Aura Fishbeck and premiered in San Fransisco. Alex has a longstanding relationship with Willing Kompany, led by choreographer Koryn Wicks, in which he does immersive and interactive sound and video design. His work as part of Willing Kompany won the first Immersive Invitational Festival in Los Angeles and has been showcased at the Denver Film Festival.
